2021 ROLAND GARROSDAY 8 MEN’S NOTESSunday 6 JuneRound of 16 Bottom Half

No. 2 Daniil Medvedev (RUS) v No. 22 Cristian Garin (CHI) No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE) v No. 12 Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) No. 6 Alexander Zverev (GER) v Kei Nishikori (JPN) Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ESP) v Federico Delbonis (ARG) On court today… • Daniil Medvedev is aiming to continue his best Roland Garros run today, with the Russian taking on Chile’s Cristian Garin on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The world No. 2 has dropped just one set in his opening 3 matches here, but Garin will present a tough challenge for Medvedev today. The Chilean has already proved his mettle at this tournament, having recovered from 0-2 down to defeat Mackenzie McDonald in the 2nd round on Wednesday. Garin also won his most-recent meeting with Medvedev, triumphing in 3 sets when the pair met at Madrid-1000 last month. Victory for the 22nd seed would see him become the first Chilean man to reach the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam since Fernando Gonzalez reached the last 8 at the 2009 US Open. • In the 2nd match of the day on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Stefanos Tsitsipas will aim to maintain his unbeaten record against the Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta. The No. 5 seed is aiming for his 37th match-win of the season – and his 20th on clay – more than any other player on Tour in 2021. Should Carreno Busta record an upset victory today, it will be just his 2nd win against a Top 5 player at a Grand Slam, with his only previous win against a Top 5 opponent at the majors coming when No. 1 Novak Djokovic was defaulted during the pair’s round of 16 match at the 2020 US Open. • In the night match on Chatrier, Alexander Zverev plays Kei Nishikori for the 6th time – and although the pair have 17 Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances between them, this will be their first meeting at a Grand Slam. Victory for Nishikori today will see him become the 51st player in history to record 100 men’s singles match-win at the Grand Slams, but he will have to record just his 2nd win over Zverev, and his first in more than 3 years, if he is to reach his century. Should Zverev emerge triumphant, as he has done on the pair’s 3 most-recent encounters, he will become the 2nd German man in the Open Era to reach 3 quarterfinals at Roland Garros – after Boris Becker, who reached the last 8 here on 4 occasions between 1986 and 1991. • Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Federico Delbonis face off in the final match of the day on Lenglen with the prize of a first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance on offer for the winner. Both players have survived 5-set clashes to reach this stage, with Davidovich Fokina winning in dramatic fashion against No. 15 seed Casper Ruud in the 3rd round on Friday, while Delbonis overcame Pablo Andujar – who had previously knocked out Dominic Thiem – in the 2nd round on Wednesday. Davidovich Fokina celebrated his 22nd birthday on Saturday, and victory today would give him even more reason to celebrate – but defeating Delbonis will be a difficult prospect. The Argentinian is ranked just 5 places below his opponent and, like Tsitsipas, is aiming for his 20th Tour-level clay court matchwin of the season today.
