2021 ROLAND GARROSGIRLS’ SINGLES SEMIFINAL NOTESFriday 11 June
Shnaider is one of 3 Russian girls through to the semifinals here, along with Oksana Selekhmeteva and Erika Andreeva – it is the first time that 3 Russian players have reached the semifinals of the girls’ singles at Roland Garros. It is the 2nd time that 3 Russian girls have reached the semifinals at a Grand Slam – after 2002 Wimbledon, when Vera Dushevina, Maria Kirilenko and Maria Sharapova all reached the last 4 of the girls’ singles. • If Shnaider wins today, it will be the first all-Russian girls’ singles final at Roland Garros. There have been 4 all-Russian girls’ singles finals at the Grand Slams – most recently when Sofya Khuk defeated Anna Blinkova to win the title at 2015 Wimbledon. • Shnaider is bidding to become the first Russian girls’ singles champion at Roland Garros since 2014, when Daria Kasatkina defeated Ivana Jorovic in the final. She is also bidding to become the first Russian girls’ singles champion at a Grand Slam since Anastasia Potapova, who defeated Dayana Yastremska in the final at 2016 Wimbledon. • By reaching the semifinals here, Shnaider has recorded her best Grand Slam performance. Her previous best performance at a Grand Slam is reaching the 3rd round at the 2020 Australian Open this year (l. Bai Zhuoxuan). She is making 3rd appearance at Roland Garros and her 6th Grand Slam appearance overall. • Last year here, Shnaider reached the 2nd round (d. Tina Nadine Smith, l. Leyre Romero Gormaz). She also reached the 2nd round on her Grand Slam debut here in 2019 (d. Valentina Ryser, l. Joanna Garland). • Shnaider is contesting her 6th junior event in 2021. Her best result this year is winning the title at J1 Villena (ESP) (d. Victoria Jiminez Kasintseva). She also finished runner-up at J1 Porto Alegre (BRA) (l. Natalia Szabanin) and reached the semifinals at JA Criciuma (BRA) (l. Bianca Behulova).
