2022 AUSTRALIAN OPEN DAY 7 MEN’S NOTES

2022 AUSTRALIAN OPEN DAY 7 MEN’S NOTES Sunday 23 January Round of 16 Top Half No. 3 Alexander Zverev (GER) v No. 14 Denis Shapovalov (CAN) Page 2 No. 6 Rafael Nadal (ESP) v Adrian Mannarino (FRA) Page 6 No. 7 Matteo Berrettini (ITA) v No. 19 Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) Page 11 No. 17 Gael Monfils (FRA) v Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) Page 15 On court today… • Rafael Nadal takes on one of the 2 other lefthanded players remaining in the draw, Adrian Mannarino, in the first men’s round of 16 match on Rod Laver Arena today. The 2009 champion is bidding to reach the quarterfinals here for the 14th time and equal John Newcombe in 2nd place on the all-time list for most Australian Open men’s singles quarterfinal appearances. Nadal has won his last 20 matches against fellow lefthanders, with his last defeat to a lefthanded player coming against Denis Shapovalov at 2017 Montreal-1000. Mannarino has already equalled his best Grand Slam performance by reaching the last 16 here – and should he upset Nadal today and reach his first quarterfinal on his 47th Grand Slam appearance, he will go 2nd on the Open Era list for most attempts before reaching the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam. • Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini saw off a fightback from Carlos Alcaraz to record a 5-set victory in the 3rd round on Friday, and the No. 7 seed faces another Spaniard, Pablo Carreno Busta, in the final match of the day on RLA. Berrettini is aiming to complete the set of quarterfinal appearances at the Grand Slams here – and will become the 10th active player to reach the quarterfinals at all 4 Grand Slam events should he win tonight. Carreno Busta is looking to reach his first quarterfinal at Melbourne Park but will need to record his first victory over a Top 10 player at the Australian Open if he is to advance to the last 8 this evening. • The 3rd match of the day on Margaret Court Arena will see No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev up against No. 14 seed Shapovalov, with Zverev looking to reach his 3rd consecutive Australian Open quarterfinal and his 8th Grand Slam quarterfinal overall. He will have to end a poor run of form against Top 20 opposition at the Grand Slams if he is to do – while he boasts a 72-67 win-loss record against Top 20 players at Tour-level, he has recorded just 4 victories in 18 matches against Top 20 players at the Grand Slams. Shapovalov, meanwhile, is bidding to become the 3rd Canadian man in history to reach the last 8 here – but if he is to progress then he will need to record just a 2nd win against a Top 5 player today. Shapovalov won his first career meeting with a Top 5 player, against Nadal at 2017 Montreal-1000, but has lost all 17 matches he has played against Top 5 opponents since then. • Gael Monfils enjoyed a strong start to the 2022 season by winning his 11th Tour-level title at Adelaide I, and has continued that form into the Australian Open, winning his opening 3 matches in straight sets to reach the last 16 here for the 5th time. The Frenchman plays Miomir Kecmanovic on John Cain Arena this evening, and victory over the former junior world No. 1 will send him through to just his 2nd Australian open quarterfinal in 17 appearances here. Kecmanovic has also impressed here this week, bouncing back from a poor end to the 2021 season – the 22-year-old, who had never previously progressed beyond the 2nd round at a Grand Slam, will become the 4th Serbian man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal if he wins tonight
