Madrid played host to a spectacular celebration of global sport as the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards were unveiled amid a dazzling red carpet and worldwide attention. Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka were crowned World Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, emerging as the brightest stars of the evening.

Alcaraz earned the men’s top honor following a dominant season that saw him capture both the French Open and US Open titles and return to World No. 1. He also became one of the youngest recipients in the award’s history, reinforcing the narrative of a powerful new era in men’s tennis.

Sabalenka claimed the women’s award after finishing the year as World No. 1, successfully defending her US Open title, and delivering consistently elite performances across major tournaments. Her recognition reflects sustained excellence in an intensely competitive women’s circuit.

The Team of the Year award went to Paris Saint-Germain, whose historic season included a UEFA Champions League triumph as part of a remarkable sextuple, marking their transformation into a defining team of the era. Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris received the Breakthrough of the Year award following his maiden title-winning campaign, firmly establishing himself among the sport’s elite drivers.

In golf, Rory McIlroy was honored with the Comeback of the Year award after completing the career Grand Slam with a long-awaited Masters victory. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal was named the inaugural Young Athlete of the Year. Toni Kroos and Nadia Comăneci were also recognized with special honors, celebrating their legendary careers and lasting contributions to sport.

The ceremony concluded with a series of symbolic accolades spanning generations, capturing both the rise of new stars and tributes to enduring legends—an unforgettable night that reflected the continuity and evolution of global sport.
