The Para triathlete returned an adverse analytical finding for a Prohibited Substance at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has referred an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) committed by Para triathlete Ronan Nunes Cordeiro at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to World Triathlon.
In its role as major event organiser of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the IPC was responsible for the anti-doping programme at the Paris 2024 Games.
Cordeiro returned an adverse analytical finding (AAF) for a Prohibited Substance in a urine sample provided in-competition on 2 September 2024 during the Men’s PTS5 Para triathlon competition at the Games. The prohibited substance was 19-norandrosterone (19-NA). The substance is included on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2024 Prohibited List under the class S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS). It is listed as a Non-Specified Substance, prohibited at all times.
The IPC charged the athlete with an ADRV under Part Two of the IPC Anti-Doping Code (the IPC Games Rules). The athlete denied the charge and requested a hearing to challenge their commission of the ADRV. On 28 January 2026, a hearing of the IPC’s Independent Anti-Doping Tribunal was held. The Independent Anti-Doping Tribunal upheld the charge, found that the athlete had committed an ADRV and imposed the full consequences requested by the IPC.
As a result of his violation, the athlete’s results obtained in the Men’s PTS5 competition at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are disqualified, together with all resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes. All other results obtained by the athlete at the Games are disqualified, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
The IPC has referred the case to World Triathlon, the international federation for Para triathlon, to determine any further applicable consequences for the athlete in accordance with World Triathlon’s anti-doping rules, including any period of ineligibility.
Each athlete is strictly liable for the substances found in their sample. An ADRV occurs whenever a prohibited substance (or its metabolites or markers) is found in their bodily sample, whether or not the athlete intentionally or unintentionally used a prohibited substance or was negligent or otherwise at fault.
As a signatory of the World Anti-Doping Code (the WADC), the IPC remains committed to a doping-free sporting environment at all levels. The IPC has established the IPC Anti-Doping Code in compliance with the general principles of the WADC, including the WADC International Standards, expecting that, in the spirit of sport, it will lead the fight against doping in sport for athletes with an impairment.
