Major Earthquake in Colombia Leaves 181 Dead as AIPS America Expresses Solidarity

On August 11, AIPS America issued a statement expressing its condolences and solidarity with the Colombian people and media professionals in the affected areas following a powerful earthquake that caused heavy casualties and significant property damage across the country.

According to the statement, the 7.4-magnitude earthquake was centered in the area of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, and was felt in nearly 600 municipalities across Colombia. Based on the latest available information, 181 people have been killed and more than 900 injured, while others remain missing. Chocó and the Coffee Axis are among the hardest-hit regions, with Pereira, Manizales, Cali, Quibdó and Armenia also affected. Many residents have lost their homes and possessions.

AIPS America extended its condolences to the families of the victims and expressed its support for those affected by the disaster. It also paid tribute to emergency and rescue teams, healthcare workers, volunteers, security forces and other organizations involved in relief efforts.

The statement noted that the disaster brought back memories of the devastating 1999 earthquake that struck Armenia and much of the Coffee Axis. Twenty-seven years later, Colombia is once again facing a major challenge. AIPS America expressed confidence that, with the combined efforts of public institutions, Colombian society and the international community, the affected areas will gradually recover and rebuild.

AIPS America also expressed particular support for journalists, photographers, cameramen and other media professionals working on the front lines in the disaster areas. It stressed that amid tragedy and uncertainty, timely, accurate and responsible reporting is essential to keeping communities informed, communicating developments and helping relief reach those most in need.

“AIPS America stands with Colombia at this time of pain and hope,” the statement said, sending a message of strength, hope and unity to the Colombian people and expressing its hope that the affected communities will overcome the disaster and return to normal life as soon as possible.
