Nairobi meetings pave the way for the Yerevan Biodiversity Conference

Nairobi, 12 August 2026 â€” Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity concluded nearly three weeks of negotiations in Nairobi, reaching crucial consensus on scientific, technical, and implementation issues. This paves the way for decisive intergovernmental negotiations at the UN

Biodiversity Conference, including COP 17, to be held this October in Yerevan, Armenia.

The meetings reviewed the first progress report of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. To date, over 70% of Parties have submitted national reports, and nearly 90% have submitted national targets. The report highlights that while conservation efforts show promise, implementation remains sluggish in critical areas such as resource mobilization and the reform of harmful subsidies.

CBD Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker emphasized that while the Nairobi outcomes are encouraging, the upcoming COP 17 in Yerevan will demand immense determination. Parties must reach a strong consensus on bridging implementation gaps to ensure the 2030 global biodiversity targets remain on track.
