Veteran broadcaster Nick Powell has been named the new Secretary General of the Sports Journalists' Association of Great Britain, succeeding Philip Barker, who stepped down after more than two decades on the committee.

Powell brings over 43 years of live broadcasting experience to the role, including a 29-year career with Sky Sports News and Sky News before his recent retirement. A two-time Royal Television Society award winner, his extensive career spans local radio, Yorkshire Television, and major sporting milestones like the 2012 London Olympics and England's 2005 Ashes win. Beyond the newsroom, he has championed industry standards as a long-time examiner for the NCTJ.

As Secretary, Powell will oversee governance, support membership services, and help manage the SJA's flagship events. His core priorities include advocating for freelancers, advancing professional development through the SJA Academy, and preserving open access for journalists.
