The ceremonial groundbreaking, led by Gergely Gulyás, Husain Al-Musallam, Ádám Schmidt, Brent Nowicki (World Aquatics Executive Director), Péter Zentai, and Zsanett Rózsahegyi (Project Manager, Láng Quarter) Csisztu Zsuzsa - AIPS Vice President

World Aquatics held a groundbreaking ceremony in Budapest’s 13th District for its new global headquarters and knowledge center. President Husain Al-Musallam stated that this milestone marks “the beginning of a new era for global aquatic sports.”

The new headquarters, scheduled to open in 2028, will transform the former industrial area on Váci Avenue into a modern complex integrating scientific research, education, and international cooperation.

Gergely Gulyás, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasized that water is an essential part of Hungary’s culture and identity, with a century-long tradition of excellence in aquatic sports.

President Al-Musallam highlighted that Hungary has been one of the most steadfast partners among the federation’s 210 member nations, making Budapest the ideal choice for the headquarters location. He expressed gratitude to the Hungarian government and the sports community for their full support.

Olympic champion and Hungarian Swimming Association President Tamás Fürjes noted that the new headquarters will include Europe’s first high diving training center, continuing Hungary’s 130-year legacy of innovation in the sport.

State Secretary for Sport Ádám Schmidt stated that this development reflects the international sports community’s trust in Hungary and represents a major achievement in sports diplomacy. The new facilities will provide Hungarian athletes with access to cutting-edge scientific support.

World Aquatics Executive Board member Tamas Gyurta said the headquarters will serve as a global home for the aquatic sports community, offering learning and exchange opportunities for athletes and international students alike.

As early as July 2023, World Aquatics voted to relocate its headquarters from Lausanne, Switzerland, to Budapest.

On November 11, 2024, the federation inaugurated its temporary office in Budapest, attended by President Al-Musallam and Hungarian Minister Péter Szijjártó. Under the agreement, Hungary will establish a global training and education center, with the new headquarters to be ready by 2026 and to assume full responsibility for aquatic sports governance starting in 2027.
