The World Snooker Championship may end its iconic run at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre after 2027. With the current contract set to expire in two years, organizers have made it clear: unless the venue is significantly upgraded or replaced, the tournament will move elsewhere.

Since 1977, the Crucible has been the spiritual home of snooker, hosting countless historic moments. But with growing demands for larger prize funds, better audience experience, and expanded capacity, the 980-seat theatre is no longer seen as fit for a modern global sporting event.

While all parties hope the championship can remain in Sheffield, unless the government and city council commit to supporting major renovations, the 50th anniversary edition could mark the Crucible’s final chapter.

Reports suggest countries like China and Saudi Arabia are interested in hosting the event, with other UK cities also in contention. The future of snooker’s most hallowed venue hangs in the balance.
