May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), with the 2025 theme: “Be Part of the Plan – Living in Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.” This year’s theme underscores the close link between protecting natural ecosystems and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The International Day for Biological Diversity was established by UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/55/201 to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992. Each year, the CBD Secretariat leads a global awareness campaign to boost public understanding and engagement on biodiversity issues.
The 2025 campaign focuses on the synergy between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), aligning with the UN’s “Pact for the Future” and its vision for strengthened global cooperation.
Key highlights this year include: the launch of new regional ecological restoration initiatives, diverse forms of biodiversity action, an interpretation of the 2025 campaign logo and design concept, and a showcase of outcomes from COP 16 as part of delivering global biodiversity commitments.
The United Nations calls on all sectors to act together and contribute to a safe ecological future for the planet and a sustainable future for humanity.
